Student celebrates GCSE results after running business alongside school

16-year-old Ellis Ferguson is celebrating after receiving superb GCSE results, all while running her social media business Infinite Socials alongside secondary school.

The teenager achieved multiple high grades of eights, sevens, and sixes – As and Bs in the old grading structure – alongside running her business.

Ferguson said: “I got the idea to start a business while studying at school. During the second lockdown, I spent a lot of time on TikTok.”

“One day I saw a video of a lady talking about her social media manager job and thought ‘I can do that!’ “

“I began educating myself on social media and all I’d need to know in order to professionally run a social media account and started my own Instagram account.

Within a month Ferguson’s Instagram gained 1,000 followers and won her first client soon after.

A young entrepreneur survey by Prince’s Trust found that 53% of 18 to 30-year-olds dream of setting up their business.

Whilst entrepreneurial pursuits have doubled in the UK since 2000, many still are to bring their dreams to fruition.

The Prince’s Trust review found that 60% of young people are reluctant to begin their entrepreneurial journey for fear of debt or lack of financial support, but 46% said confidence would make them more likely to start.

“Running a business alongside managing school studies is a challenging task.”

Ferguson continues: “My parents have always been extremely encouraging. My dad is always helping me proofread emails and social media posts, and my mum loves helping with the filming and photography.”

“I’ve had a varied reaction from my peers at school, some are interested in what I do whilst others are not.”

She says running a business alongside managing school studies is a challenging task, requiring a lot of time management and planning, especially with GCSE exams.
