‘Unplugged’ digital detox cabin comes to the New Forest

With growing numbers of smartphone addiction across the world, Unplugged has brought its digital detox cabins to Plaitford, near Romsey.

Unplugged is convinced that the world would be happier and more productive if people dedicated time to going offline for a few days each year.

Founded by friends Hector Hughes and Ben Elliott in 2020 after noticing their 14 hours of screen time a day, Hughes and Elliott decided to create an opportunity for people to unplug from their devices and recharge without the need to fly across the world.

Upon arriving at the digital detox cabins, visitors can lock devices away in lock boxes and have use of an old Nokia phone, an instant camera, and games to truly disconnect from the world.

Hughes and Elliott, Co-Founders of Unplugged, said: “Numerous studies have linked phone addiction to increased anxiety and depression. This is down to the overuse of social media and the ‘always on’ culture that prevents us from fully switching off.

“Spending time offline and in nature has proven to reduce levels of the stress hormone cortisol by 21%.”

“We’re convinced that the world, and everyone on it, would be happier and more productive if we dedicated time to going offline for a few days each year.”

A 2021 survey by Metro revealed 99.2% of smartphone users showed some form of fear and anxiety if they accidentally leave their phones, a fear now described as ‘nomophobia’.

Unplugged believe three nights is the optimal time for a digital detox and to break habits of reaching for a phone and setting a phone aside will help focus and sharpen critical thinking and productivity, improve sleep, and boost mood and human connection.

Hughes and Elliott said: “By spending just a week away from social media has been proven to increase human happiness. A digital detox can kick-start your journey to having a better relationship with your phone and your pals.”

The dog-friendly cabin ‘Loki’ includes a double bed, incredible view, outdoor fire pit, gas stove, kitchen equipment, hot shower, small fridge and freezer, and an eco-toilet.

Unplugged currently have 10 cabins with six more launching by the end of 2022.

The 3-day digital detox stays start from £390 per cabin.
